Coogee rock pool

The ocean baths and pools spread along the state's rocky coastline have been providing respite from the heat and the perils of the sea for almost 200 years. Some are natural depressions enclosed by rings of rocks; others are deep pools hewn out of inter-tidal rock platforms or reinforced with concrete to hold back the relentless pounding of the waves. Each of the 100 or so ocean pools in NSW has its own individual character, not to mention magnificent setting.

Ross Jones Memorial Pool was built at Coogee Beach in 1947. This rock pool has a long history of association with local swimming clubs and their members. The National Trust has made comment that the pool is significant due to the unique design, which includes concrete piers that extend above the wall resembling turrets at the top of a sandcastle.

This "sandcastle" at Coogee beach brings back many people's memories of childhood. This is the reason why it attracts many photographers and other artists to come. Memorable images of this pool have been created by Ian Lever, Ian Swift, Ken Duncan, Mark Spencer, Steve Back, Patrick van Daele and James Willebrant.
