Coogee rock pool

The ocean baths and pools spread along the state's rocky coastline have been providing respite from the heat and the perils of the sea for almost 200 years. Some are natural depressions enclosed by rings of rocks; others are deep pools hewn out of inter-tidal rock platforms or reinforced with concrete to hold back the relentless pounding of the waves. Each of the 100 or so ocean pools in NSW has its own individual character, not to mention magnificent setting.

Ross Jones Memorial Pool was built at Coogee Beach in 1947. This rock pool has a long history of association with local swimming clubs and their members. The National Trust has made comment that the pool is significant due to the unique design, which includes concrete piers that extend above the wall resembling turrets at the top of a sandcastle.

This "sandcastle" at Coogee beach brings back many people's memories of childhood. This is the reason why it attracts many photographers and other artists to come. Memorable images of this pool have been created by Ian Lever, Ian Swift, Ken Duncan, Mark Spencer, Steve Back, Patrick van Daele and James Willebrant.

Project 2 - Edward Hopper

Hopper, Edward
A Woman in the Sun
1961
Oil on canvas
40 x 60 inches
Whitney Museum of American Art, New York

Narrative:
A naked woman, without sacrificing her physicality, bathed in sunlight, represents the life of mind, soul and imagination.

By the first impression, the painting seemed to be simple because of its composition. When the viewer take a closer observation and do more thinking about the subject, one will suspect the reasons why the woman is naked yet still standing in front of an opened window staring at the view. By then, the viewer will join the woman in the journey of her mind, interested in understanding her feeling, where it is possible to be positive feelings or negative feelings or the both tangled together.

As of positive feelings, we can observed that she has an unmade bed bedside and high heels below that, on the addition to the fact that she is smoking, we can imagine that she has just had sex. From the guest lecturer on Wednesday, I was told that the naked woman is Edward Hopper’s wife, so she is actually not alone in the room; Hopper was in the room with her. Secondly, if the painting is expressed positively, we can suggest that the light from the window is a sunrise and she is just simply enjoying the view in relaxation.

As of negative feelings, the light from the window can be read as a sunset. Then the naked woman is unlikely to be admiring the view but she was carried away by her thoughts over something unpleasant. The high heels indicated that she is an urbanite that went to countryside. We can imagine that she is hiding away from something unpleasant, seeking for some peacefulness in her mind.

Project 2 - Model

The shape of my model is very simple (just like a box) and it seems like one single building. When you observe it closer, the structure is in fact a lot more complicated and it consist of two interlocking structure which are two individual bodies.
The white structure represents the positive feelings and the balsa wood one represents the negative feelings. The curtain wall of the white structure faces the east where the sunrise can be seen, oppositely, the other faces the west where the sunset can be seen. The site will be a very empty area, with no other buildings nearby as if this building is the only one that existed but this building is really formed by two buildings interlocking together, that in a way represents that she is not alone, that Hopper was in the room.
